That was me with Widow’s Bay on Apple TV.

Marketed as a mystery thriller with horror elements, Widow’s Bay follows the mayor of a cursed New England island town that’s trying to reinvent itself as a tourist destination—despite generations of locals insisting the town is, well… cursed.

After just one episode, I’m completely invested.

It’s Not Just a Thriller…

Going in, I expected something dark and serious.

Instead, I got something much better.

The mystery is there.

The eerie atmosphere is there.

The creepy little town immediately pulls you in.

But what surprised me most was how funny it is.

Not slapstick comedy.

Not jokes thrown in just because.

The humor comes from perfectly timed dialogue and characters who deliver lines so naturally that you find yourself laughing even while wondering what terrifying thing is about to happen next.

It’s that dry, understated humor that catches you off guard.

The Writing Is What Sold Me

There are shows with incredible special effects.

There are shows with huge twists.

And then there are shows where the writing makes you want to keep watching.

Widow’s Bay falls into that last category.

Several lines in the first episode landed so perfectly that I actually laughed out loud.

That’s rare for me.

One thing I already love is that the setting isn’t just a backdrop.

The island itself feels alive.

The fog.

The isolation.

From what I’ve seen so far, though, I completely understand why people have been recommending it. Critics and viewers have also praised its unusual blend of horror, mystery, and comedy, with many saying the balance between suspense and humor is what makes it stand out.

Am I hooked? Absolutely.

If you enjoy mysteries with creepy small-town vibes, clever dialogue, and humor that sneaks up on you when you least expect it, Widow’s Bay is worth adding to your watch list.
